From 10am to midday, the volunteer group will  lead a walk to encourage new participants to volunteer in the area, as part of a bigger project to connect Mount Jerrabomberra with Tuggeranong. 

Queanbeyan Landcare publicity officer Tom Baker said a ‘‘Friends of’’ group was needed to be guardians for the new plantings, as it was part of a bigger project to reconnect native vegetation. 

“We’re desperately looking for people in Jerrabomberra, especially people living near the edge of the natural areas to become involved in this,” Mr Baker said.

He suggested a name like Friends of Jerrabomberra, “or whatever they want to call themselves”.

“They’d be people who live near it, and they’d really care for that part and watch over it.”

He said Landcare would be door knocking and leaving pamphlets for people who live near the area of interest, to ask them to keep an eye out for vandals.

“We think a lot of people probably wouldn’t have thought to join Landcare, but if they are prompted to think about it they might.

“We want to give them the opportunity and encouragement to take this step with some other people,” Mr Baker said.

He said the Jerrabomberra area was part of a jigsaw, a stepping stone.

“The long term aim is for a restored wildlife corridor,” Mr Baker said.

“To do that will take many years, but we have made a start with this project.”

The project, a collaboration between Landcare, Molonglo Catchment Group, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, local landowners and the NSW Environment Trust has seen the land donated back to the council for conservation to offset the land used for development near Googong.

“If we do well here in this project, we’re likely to get some more money down the track, but we need the community element in the medium to long term to do that,’’ Mr Baker said.

The walk will start from the roundabout where Balcombe Street and Bicentennial Drive meet in Jerrabomberra. 

Mr Baker recommends taking a hat, sturdy shoes and any food or drink that you may need. Walking difficulty is between easy to moderate.
