Ly Ho, 26, died after he was stabbed in the abdomen during the fight between two groups of people that also left four others hospitalised.

Police were called to Howitt Place in Bonnyrigg at 11pm on Friday and found five men with serious stab wounds and fractures.

It's believed the brawl began when a woman arguing with her partner in the quiet cul-de-sac went to ask her neighbours for help.

Seven News reported two neighbours came to the woman's assistance and were confronted by the man and several of his friends.

The groups are then thought to have attacked each other with knives and metal poles.

Most of the men were taken to Liverpool Hospital, where Mr Ho died from his injuries at 12.30am.

On Saturday morning, his family flocked to the hospital and comforted each other as they sat on the ground outside.

Another man was taken to Fairfield Hospital.

Superintendent Peter Lennon, commander of Fairfield Local Area Command, said the situation became "doomed" when members of the group picked up weapons.

"His family are ruined, and the community have now got to cope with this. It's very, very tragic and stupid behaviour," Superintendent Lennon said.

"They've opened his abdomen and caused him to die as a result of that injury.

"People carrying knives and weapons after arguments, it's doomed for fatality, and that's what's happened in this case."

Police set up a crime scene on Howitt Place on Saturday morning, with local investigators and police from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad investigating the death.

As two blood-splattered cars were taken away, neighbours described the "scuffling" and "screaming" they heard the night before.

"I was getting ready to go to bed and I heard these horrible thumping noises," neighbour Terry Corcoran said.

"It sounded to me like somebody was really slamming a car door, and it happened about a dozen times."
