The Southern NSW Local Health District experiences a higher rate of obesity compared with the state average.
Over the past 13 years, the rates of overweight or obese people has risen by more than 10 per cent in adults in the area with only half of adults meeting the requirements for adequate physical activity.
The Get Healthy Service helps people make lifestyle changes, including providing information and ongoing one-on-one coaching on healthy eating, physical activity, and ways to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
In the last six months since joining the Get Healthy Service, residents across the Southern NSW Local Health District have lost an average of 2.8kg, waist circumference has reduced by 1.5cm and the amount of vegetable and fruit serves have increased.
Overweight and obesity is a serious, chronic medical condition.
Approximately 40,000 NSW hospitalisations in 2011-2012 were attributed to high body mass, and almost 1,000 in this region alone.
The service is available Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm by calling 1300 806 258.
