The blaze, at Wing Chun Academy on Hindley Street, has since been contained.
Initial reports from the scene in the southern city said a pile of rubbish on a nearby street had caught alight at about 12.15 Central time, sending large plumes of acrid smoke across the central business district.

Photos from the scene show a building next to the hotel has been consumed by fire, with firefighters on a cherry picker dousing the blaze through the building's roof.
Parts of the city have been closed off, including Hindley Street, one of Adelaide's major thoroughfares. People in buildings in Leigh Street and Peel Street have also been evacuated, reportedly because of fears of burning asbestos spreading from the blaze.
At least 70 firefighters were on the scene along with 18 appliances.
More to come.
