President Jessica Robinson said the sport - while being quite physical - did not discriminate suiting people of any gender, fitness and over the age of 18-years-old.
"In roller derby there are advantages to every body type," she said.
"If you're more solid and stable you create walls while the smaller players are quite jumpy and get through those gaps and get along the walls."
The 'come and try' day will be held at the group's training ground at Queanbeyan High School on Saturday, August 15 from 2.30 - 4.30pm.
The session will be free and there will be gear provided on the day. However, participants must bring their own mouthguards.
"The idea is for those who are curious to come out, put on some skates and experience derby train before making a commitment and forking over any money," Ms Robinson said.
"It's a full contact sport on quad roller skates. It's very fast paced and energetic. There's a bit of strategy involved so you'll need your thinking cap."
The VDL currently fields two women's, one men's (the only men's team in Canberra) and a co-ed team.
"We're a very inclusive league, we have a place for everyone," Ms Robinson said.
"Even if you have no experience, we can train you from the ground up."
Following their 'come and try' day, the VDL will hold a "Rollathon" at Queanbeyan Town Park on Sunday, August 16 from 10am to 4pm.
Skaters will be running laps of the outdoor velodrome to raise money for the volunteer-run organisation. There will also be a sausage sizzle and cake stall on the day.
