Fyfe was fined $1500, which was reduced with an early guilty plea, for tripping Western Bulldogs midfielder Koby Stevens during the third-quarter of Sunday’s 13 point win at Etihad Stadium.

The panel judged the incident to be intentional contact, with low impact to the body.

The decision will pave the way for Fyfe to play his 100th game against North Melbourne at Domain Stadium on Saturday night.

Fyfe remains eligible to win the Brownlow Medal.

EARLIER: Nat Fyfe's Brownlow Medal eligibility is set to be preserved under the new disciplinary system even though he was reported on Sunday for tripping. 

But the same system that was expected to save players like Steve Johnson from themselves, in terms of petty breaches, could imperil the crafty Geelong forward when the match review panel meets on Monday.

Fyfe was reported for throwing his leg out and tripping Western Bulldog Koby Stevens, causing him him tumble over. 

Even if Fyfe's act is deemed intentional, the only way he would be ineligible for the Brownlow is if the impact is deemed medium or above. A classification of intentional, low impact and body contact - Stevens did not hit his head as he fell - would trigger a $1500 fine that could be reduced to $1000.

To be ineligible for the Brownlow, a player has to miss at least one match due to suspension. Crucially, the issue of a bad record does not apply to offences which in isolation attract a fine, such as what Fyfe's is expected to be. 

The midfielder was suspended for a total of four matches last year, but that would only increase his penalty for the trip - by one match - if the impact of the trip is deemed medium or high.

The most likely outcome is that Fyfe will accept a $1000 fine and be in the situation of having to commit another two minor offences - or one more serious - to lose his Brownlow eligibility.

Steve Johnson, however, is likely to be more nervous about the outcome of the weekly review despite not being reported as Fyfe was.

If the panel decides the level of force in Johnson's swat which made contact to the groin of Sydney's Jarrad McVeigh on Saturday night was enough to sustain a charge the outcome will be bad for the Cats, irrespective of the specific grading.

The most lenient grading - careless, low impact and groin contact - would ordinarily trigger a $1500 fine that could be cut to $1000 with a guilty plea.

Johnson, however, would attract a fine of $2500 that could be cut to $1500, because he already escaped with a fine once this season, in round one for rough conduct to Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell.

While that would allow Johnson to play for Geelong on Friday night against Carlton it would also make him the first player to be at risk of a one-match suspension for any subsequent offence this season that would otherwise attract a fine.

If the panel decides Johnson's swat was intentional, rather than careless, it would trigger a base suspension of two matches.

It would be at that point that Johnson's bad record - he just meets the minimum threshold of two matches suspended in the preceding two years - would increase that ban to three matches. A guilty plea would cut the penalty to two matches, which would rule him out for the Cats' matches against the Blues and then away to West Coast.

The rationale to excuse Johnson due to lack of impact will be hindered by McVeigh's reaction to the incident, as he winced and doubled over immediately afterwards. 

Should he be charged - the level of impact appears to be on the borderline - the chances of his actions being deemed careless rather than intentional would also be hindered by the fact McVeigh was not in possession at the time - the ball was about a metre in front of him - so Johnson had no cause to strike him with his right arm in the tackle-like motion.

North Melbourne forward Jarrad Waite is unlikely to face suspension after being reported on Friday night over his collision with Essendon's Zach Merrett.

Waite was officially reported for striking for the late spoil on Merrett, who comfortably took an overhead mark before the Kangaroos forward arrived at the contest, but that could be changed to rough conduct because the bigger impact to Merrett was seemingly because he lifted his knees into his opponent's back.

A classification of careless, low impact and body contact would trigger a $1500 fine for Waite which could be cut to $1000 with a guilty plea.
