Los Angeles: The second teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Star Wars sequel The Force Awakens has proved a financial boon for the US studio Disney, adding roughly US$2 billion to the value of the company's stock.

The astonishing lift in share value has come in the wake of the trailer's release, reflecting how the US money market responds to what is clearly positive buzz for the film – the first Star Wars film in a decade.

The trailer, the second trailer released so far by Disney to market the film, was deliberately pitched at 'old school' Star Wars fans, with an emphasis on the franchise's established characters, such as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo.

US analysts are already tipping the film will be a box office juggernaut, with suggestions it could pull as much as US$225 million on its opening weekend, and as much as US$1.8 billion in total box office.

Revenue on that scale could put the film into the history books as the third most successful film of all time, behind the only two films to crack the US$2 billion waterline, Avatar and Titanic.

The trailer was released to co-incide with Star Wars Celebration, a four-day Star Wars fan convention in Anaheim, California.

The convention also brought the film's director J.J. Abrams, its new stars John Boyega and Daisy Ridley, and its older, returning stars, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels to the stage.

Hamill told the audience that Star Wars creator George Lucas had approached him about the plans for a new 'sequel trilogy' before selling his company, Lucasfilm, which owns Star Wars, to Disney in 2012.

Hamill said he was initially uncertain about the prospect of playing Luke Skywalker again. "I had a beginning, middle and end; my story was finished," he said.

And he was also uncertain of Abrams, he added. "I was a little suspicious," he said. "I was like, wait a second, that Star Trek guy? I just thought it seems odd. Not that I was predisposed to dislike him. I was just cautious about it."

Hamill told the audience at Celebration he was won over by Abrams old school approach, preferring to use real sets than special effects, and wanting to make films which were closer in style to the 'original trilogy' than the 'prequel trilogy'.

"This film is the first Star Wars film that is actually in the hands of someone who grew out of fandom," Hamill said. "He feels the way you feel."

Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens will be released in cinemas in December, 2015.
