Local butcher Peter Lindbeck and neighbouring Lonergan Drive residents Claire Cooper and Peter Kontis are among those likely to be most affected by EDE noise due to their close proximity to the proposed 180-metre bridge across the river.

Butcher Lindbeck said his family home was set to be "pulverised" by truck noise across the bridge. He said he held serious doubts about Council's noise mitigation strategy after noticing Council's noise report under-reported the number of nearby noise-affected homes in his Noise Control Area (NCA), as well as misrepresenting those it did consider to be noise-affected as only single storey dwellings.

"There's not a single storey place along here," Mr Lindbeck said.

"Our house will be absolutely inundated and pulverised by noise, and there's nothing they can do to stop the noise because you can't build a barrier in front of our place. We're on the river, so all that's going to between us and the bridge is fresh air."

The Lindbecks were one local couple who attended an invite-only public information session hosted by Council for affected Greenleigh residents last Saturday. They were joined by fellow Lonergan Dr couple Claire Cooper and Peter Kontis, who noted the session was held five days after Council's public consultation on the EDE period had closed.

"Any issues raised at these meetings cannot now be included in our submissions to Councillors on the EDE," Ms Cooper said.

However Ms Cooper and her partner did send a detailed submission on their EDE concerns to Council during the consultation period, although reported significant difficulties in getting responses from Council staff. On one occasion Mr Kontis said he sent in a series of questions in January, only to be told by Council representatives that a response couldn't be provided until February 11 due to staff absences and illnesses, again a date occurring after the consultation period closed on February 9.

"So we had questions about the road, you ask them five weeks before the consultation period closes, and they get back to us and say 'sorry we're too busy.'

"But we didn't choose the consultation period to happen over Christmas- they did, and it's their responsibility to manage it," he said.

The Queanbeyan Age put these concerns to Council, however a spokesperson said only that all EDE inquiries were followed up "as quickly as possible."

"Council is working closely with property owners and residents in relation to noise mitigation measures. Council has updated information in the report as required," the spokesperson said.

Butcher Lindbeck said he had some of his concerns followed up by a number of Queanbeyan city councillors, and he thanked them for "getting involved and taking the time to acquaint themselves with the issues facing residents."

Meanwhile, Mr Kontis said he was concerned Greenleigh and Queanbeyan residents would lose its country lifestyle if the EDE went ahead.

"People have a right to expect to be able to live their lives inside and outside their house without undue noise. 

"Queanbeyan promotes itself on its signs as 'Country living, city benefits'. Well there's no country living left once the road goes in- it becomes a ring-barked, medium density accommodation location for Canberra," he said.
