IT was always going to be a story that stirred a bit of controversy and a piece on the town's nickname of 'Quangers' did not fail to deliver.

Readers were quick to let their thoughts be known on the topic and some of it was quite unkind. Some of the more negative feedback included describing 'Quangers' as sounding more "like a bad sausage" or "a band leader's cymbal".
Others labelled the slang term as "horrible", "too ridiculous for words" and "bogan".
While another individual left this menacing message on the Queanbeyan Age Facebook wall: "Hate it ... don't even think about using 'Quangers' for anything relating to Queanbeyan."
But it wasn't all bad news for little old Quangers - some readers had a soft spot for the nickname.
"Love it", "use it all the time", "love Quangers, love Queanbeyan and our real people feel" and most convincingly "it's always been Quangers! That's what it's known as, you can't change it now."
One of the supporters of 'Quangers', Scotty of 104.7FM breakfast duo 'Scotty and Nige', spoke about the 'controversy' on air earlier in the week.
"Those that say this does nothing to help the already poor image of Queanbeyan compared to Canberra must be a little precious," he said.
"I mean what about some of the nicknames for Canberra suburbs? Charny for Charnwood, Dicko for Dickson, Tuggers, North Cooma for Banks and a big fave of mine Bel-compton for all the Belconnen residents. You don't see those folks firing up on social media about the nickname of these ACT haunts."
He told the Queanbeyan Age he was unsure what the big deal was particularly as many listeners self-identified themselves as being from 'Quangers'.
And he wasn't alone in his stance as he had many listeners calling in to support him.
"I had a few callers agreeing with my points that people need to be less precious and it's nowhere near as bad as Queanbehole. It's just a word. I don't think it has negative connotations, it doesn't mean anything," he said.
"I've used 'Quangers' on air a couple of times and we've never had anyone call in to complain. A bunch of listeners actually use it, they'll say 'I'm Deb from Quangers'. People go off about things all the time ... they just need a sense of humour."
While there was a bit of division between the lovers and haters of "Quangers", the ongoing debate generated a whole host of other interesting nicknames.
There were the usual suspects like struggle town, Queanbo, Queanbehole but the overwhelming majority seemed to really like Qtown.
A few left of centre and rather imaginary contributions included: The Big Q, Queanbangers, Qbreezy and Qtopia. Some readers went as far as to say 'centre of the Universe' and 'God's Country'.
And then there's always the section who prefer the town, straight up, just "Queanbeyan" thanks.
