The use of 'Mr Fluffy' asbestos insulation in homes in Queanbeyan and the ACT has received wide media coverage over the past six months, and NSW WorkCover is now offering a free identification service for homes built prior to 1980.
Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall encouraged residents to make use of the service.
"I am very pleased to see this service being offered to Queanbeyan residents because Mr Fluffy asbestos can cause significant health risks.
"I encourage any homeowner in Queanbeyan whose house was built before 1980 to register for a free inspection,” he said.
The free identification service applies to homes built prior to 1980, and is available to residents who have lived in Queanbeyan for a 12-month period.
Residents are encouraged to contact WorkCover NSW by calling 13 10 50 to determine if they are eligible and how they can apply for the free sampling service.
Loose grey material in your roof does not necessarily mean you have asbestos insulation. Other products such as cellulose and rockwool are also loose and fluffy and have commonly been used for insulation. However, if you are aware of, or suspect that material in your roof or ceiling may be loose-fill asbestos, or “Mr Fluffy”, it is recommended you have your property tested by accessing this free service.
There is currently no legal requirement to disclose whether your home is impacted by loose-fill asbestos when selling. It is recommended for people buying a pre-1980 built home to engage a consultant to undertake an Asbestos Report and specifically request that roof spaces are checked for loose asbestos.
