THEY'VE had the chance to 'kiss the pig', 'cuddle a croc' and 'snuggle the snake', and this year the teachers at Jerrabomberra Public School have to contend with the 'beast in the bag'.

It's a tradition that has become associated with the biennial Jerrabomberra Public School Fete - the school's biggest fundraiser to be held on Sunday, October 26.

In the lead up to the Fete, select teachers are pitted against one another in a fundraising competition. The teacher with the least amount of money is allowed the 'opportunity' to get up close and personal with a critter.

"Our teachers love to promote our Fete in this way," principal Chris Hunter said.

"It gives an element of fun and anticipation to this biennale school event. Monies raised this year will go towards our Performing Arts room, built by the P&C and school, and due to be opened on the fete day."

Teachers Suse O'Bryan, Renee Flinn and Durell Rowley have been raising money to try and avoid the scary task.

Each lunch hour, Mrs O'Bryan and Mrs Flinn, have ventured into the playground in their costumes to ask staff and students to make a donation in their tin. They hope it will save them from having to reach into a bag and discover what beast is inside.

"Mrs O'Bryan is petrified of reptilian animals and I have a phobia of anything that scurries," Mrs Flinn said. "[But] I'm quietly confident...our fundraising has gone really well and we've been out every lunchtime for the last 10 weeks."

Ms Hunter herself has fallen victim to the task, having to 'snuggle the snake in a previous year. However, this year's beast is shrouded in mystery, adding an extra element of intrigue.

"It could be a fluffy duck or a lizard. We don't know but it won't harm them, let's put it that way," she said with a chuckle.

Community members are invited to come along and be part of the fun on the day. There will be numerous stalls, amusement rides, performances and activities including a treasure hunt and face painting.

The Jerrabomberra Public School Fete will be held on Sunday, October 26 at Coachwood Avenue from 10 am - 3 pm.
