Spotify found 61 per cent of people worry about being judged for their music choices.
Spotify also found it ranked as a cardinal sin to change change tracks mid-way, with 47 per cent saying it was their biggest peeve.
Other no-no's included ads interrupting the music at 38 per cent and playing the same song on repeat at 32 per cent.
Spotify head of music Alicia Sbrugnera said people shouldn't stress about their music choices.
"We've all felt the pressure of being in charge of the tunes, but our research shows that road-trippers are happy for everyone to have a turn sharing their favourite songs," she said.
Fifty three per cent of respondents said they "were keen to let everyone have a chance to play their tunes".
Some genres did come out on top with 60 per cent playing it safe by choosing pop, followed by 'throwbacks' at 47 per cent and hip-hop at 44 per cent.
Most believed that drivers should also double as DJs during trips with 33 per cent of respondents saying they should control the music.
And if not the driver, 28 per cent believed the front seat passenger should be in control.
