A man gunned down outside a home in Melbourne's outer southeast may have been armed with a shovel, police questioning his suspected shooter say.

Neighbours on Lecky Street in Cranbourne reported several gunshots about 8pm on Wednesday, with police arriving to find a man dead in front of a house.
He is yet to be identified.
The occupants of the home were spoken to before a 49-year-old Cranbourne man was arrested. He was taken into custody and is assisting police.
It is believed the men knew each other.
Police are working to establish the circumstances of the shooting and the motive behind it, although it is believed to have been preceded by a "verbal altercation".
"We do believe that the two males attended the address several hours prior to this incident, and obviously a male returned shortly after eight o'clock," homicide squad detective Dean Thomas told reporters on Thursday.
"We're working to piece together whether that was one of them that was there earlier, to see whether that's linked.
"We certainly believe, at this point, that the male that attended the property shortly after eight o'clock may have been armed with a shovel."
Police are still searching for a firearm.
Insp Thomas said it is too early to say if drugs were involved, but that the incident does not appear to be linked to recent shootings in Melbourne.
"At this stage, there is no link to any other broader organised crime groups," he said.
"There is nothing to link this incident last night to any other shooting incidents that have occurred in Melbourne over the past week or so."
A house in Epping was targeted as part of a drive-by shooting on Tuesday morning, hours after a man armed with a screwdriver was shot by police in Coburg North.
Two days earlier, ex-Mongols member Suleiman 'Sam' Abdulrahim was gunned down while behind the wheel of a Mercedes 4WD in Fawkner.
The masked gunmen fled and are yet to be captured.
Premier Daniel Andrews said he is not aware of Victoria Police asking the state government for further legislative changes to crack down on illegal firearms but would support them if requested.
"If the chief commissioner wants it, the chief commissioner gets it," he said.
