Queanbeyan Civic and Cultural Precinct: Work on the Queanbeyan Civic and Cultural Precinct is progressing quickly, with the site now fenced off for initial relocation of services before demolition and excavation can begin. The builder, ADCO construction, will be providing frequent updates on the upcoming work which council will help to promote. There is a temporary loss of parking spaces in the Lowe car park now that the fencing is in place. There are also changes to pedestrian access for the remainder of the build. A map outlining these changes is available here for those visiting the library, The Q or other central businesses and services.

Main Street Upgrade Fund applications open: Owners of commercial buildings in the Queanbeyan CBD and on main streets in Bungendore and Braidwood are encouraged to apply for the Main Street Upgrade Fund. This new fund assists owners of commercial buildings on our main streets to invest in the refurbishment of their shop fronts and facades. Maintenance for Miners Memorial in Captains Flat: Last week council staff made repairs to part of the Miners Memorial in Captains Flat. The memorial is dedicated to miners who died between 1938 and 1962 and is an important part of the town's history. The work included removal of four perished covers from the memorial which were obscuring detailed scenes beneath. The new replacement covers allow the artwork to be shown again and should be easier to maintain for the future.
Keep Australia Beautiful Week: Keep Australia Beautiful Week runs each year in August and asks all Australians to do their bit to help keep their towns, villages and communities beautiful. This year's challenge is the 7 Day Plastic Pledge. Participants are encouraged to pledge to refuse a single use plastic item between August 16-22. Common items to refuse include: takeaway coffee cups, bottled water or plastic cutlery. The pledge aims to help communities make small changes to their habits that can contribute to big changes.
Find out more about how you can pledge to refuse plastic here.
