Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council hosted a National Sorry Day event on Wednesday, ahead of the annual Reconciliation Walk on Tuesday, June 1.

The event was hosted by Keith Brandy, Council's Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer.
National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as 'The Stolen Generations'.

"There's not an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person in this country who hasn't been affected by the legacy of the Stolen Generation," Mr Brandy said.
At the event, Aboriginal Elder Cheryl Williams shared her story of the Stolen Generation and Goombine, Richard Scott-Moore, and Yaddiman, Ronald McCloud, shared two songs from the Yuin region, Nowra.
"National Sorry Day is an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on the mistakes of the past so that together we can create a brighter future," Mr Brandy added.

The Reconciliation Walk will take place next week and acts as a further reminder of the role we all play in building relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and futures.
Hundreds of students from local schools will be taking part.
Walkers will meet at Trinculo Place at 10am before walking across the Queens Bridge, along Monaro Street and concluding at the sunken gardens in Queanbeyan Park with a cultural performance and flag raising ceremony.
