Fishing | Get to the south for all the action

The whiting bite is really starting to take shape in most systems and big duskies have been active. It's amazing how many big fish are turning up these days; catch and release is really making a difference in my book.

Kingfish have been very sporadic at Montague and a few other favourite locations on the coast, and the days we have current, they come on the bite big time.

Figuring out the recipe to success is half the battle. One day its squid, the next is livies; jigs today, surface tomorrow.

A nice run of kings has been taking place a little north of Jervis Bay - less fish than Montague but better sizes, with one boat bringing home their bag of all 85cm plus fish.

Offshore, still some yellowfin around and bluefin have now been caught by a few commercial boats and at least one trailer boat.

Some pretty lost fish - we are days away from summer, not the middle of winter.

Locally, Lake Burley Griffin seems to be going from strength to strength.

Morning sessions have been outstanding; goldens have been found in the shallows chasing bait, redfin have also been quite thick and reasonably easy to find.

Night sessions have been quite hard, especially Thursday nights - the anglers in the Big Burley Bash have really struggled the last few weeks, big winds being the hardest factor to tackle.

Googong is a must - plenty of gold footballs are being caught right now.

Keep in mind the dam will be closed most days with big winds and days of fire bans.
