Western Creek Community Council | Firies and police to give advice

The ACT Rural Fire Service will be there to talk about "Being Bushfire Ready".

We are also hopeful that the ACT Police can attend and provide an update on the law and order situation in Weston Creek and Molonglo.

Last month there was an excellent and detailed presentation and discussion on the on the 'ACT Climate Change Strategy 2019-25' together with the 'Canberra's Living Infrastructure Plan: Cooling the City'.

We also had an update from the Suburban Land Agency on the development of Wright, Coombs, the proposed group centre and the new suburb of Whitlam. You can see both of these on our website.

Council is working on a submission for consideration for the ACT 2020/2021 Budget. There are several matters that we are seeking, including a new or renovated community centre, upgrades of the local shopping areas in Fisher and Duffy, a greater focus on the public domain on footpaths - new and repaired, increased trimming of trees, increased mowing, and improving walking and cycling paths. There is a focus on Molonglo in shops and cafes in Coombs and Wright, the bringing forward of the development of the group centre and the building of the bridge over the Molonglo River. If you have some suggestions we would welcome them.

We are still waiting for the development application to be placed on the ACTPLA site. A check with the company indicates that the revised proposal for the development is now finalised and waiting for ACTPLA to finish its "completeness check."

It's that time again when council reaches out to residents for you to tell us what you think across a range of areas. These include facilities at Cooleman Court, Weston Creek, Molonglo, infrastructure needs, the public domain and roads and transport. We are hoping to have this out by the end of October.

Council continues with the view that Light Rail Stage Two to Woden should only go ahead with a positive cost benefit and a quicker time taken to reach the city than by bus from Woden. If it does go ahead then council states that the direct services from Weston Creek and Molonglo to the city should remain, and that any interchange in the vicinity of Kent Street in Deakin should be a high-quality bus/light rail interchange that allows for same platform transfers between modes, and the buses continue to the city.

Council is extremely disappointed with the arbitrary cancellation of the Environment and Planning Forum. This forum brought together senior government officials, private sector organisations, public advocacy bodies and community councils. It has been an engaging body and one in which there has been a great deal of exchange of views on a range of matters.
