2019 NAIDOC Awards: We are seeking nominations for the 2019 NAIDOC Awards. Nominations are open until July 5 and will be presented during NAIDOC Week. Many local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people contribute to Australian society through music, art, culture, community, education, environment, sport, employment and politics. If you think that someone in our community deserves to be recognised for their contribution, then nominate them for a 2019 NAIDOC Award. Nominations are open in the categories of Elder of the Year, Apprentice or Trainee of The Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Youth of the Year, Person of the Year, Inspirational Woman, and for a Non-Aboriginal Organisation (which must be an active member within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community). Captains Flat Community Hall: We have just completed some work on the Captains Flat Community Hall, with a fresh coat of paint highlighting its distinctive character. Prior to the painting, some roof repairs were undertaken, with more planned in the new financial year. The existing signs were also removed with new signage to be installed on the fascia above the doors.
Wood heaters and air pollution: June 5 was World Environment Day and the theme for this year was air pollution. Aside from harming our environment, air pollution is also potentially damaging to people's health. During winter in our region, smoke from wood heaters and fireplaces is a major cause of air pollution. If you have a wood heater, there are a few tips to get the best from your heater and wood supply, as well as reducing air pollution. Always burn small logs of aged, dry hardwood, store your firewood undercover in a dry ventilated area, never burn rubbish, driftwood, treated or painted wood and don't let your heater smoulder overnight - keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame.
