- Autumn sown vegie beds need some attention - leafy greens should be kept growing steadily with regular feeds of liquid manure. Hill up the soil around brassicas to keep the stems sturdy; firm the soil round Brussels sprouts to keep them firm rather than puffy and hill leeks to keep the stems white.
- Broad bean need adequate supplies of potash to avoid fungal spots- brown patches on stems, leaves and pods.
- Prune late summer flowering shrubs like oleander, hibiscus and buddleia.
- Bulbs that can still be planted now include tulips, liliums, Solomon's seal, alliums and lily of the valley. Established clumps can be lifted and divided now provided they are immediately replaced before the 'scales' of the bulbs dry out.
