Fishing | First frost signals start of cod fever

Gloves, beanie and warm clothing is a must as below freezing temperatures have been recorded already (winter is coming...).

Most keen cod anglers are now out and about chasing trophy fish - traditionally the first frost is the time to start chasing the bigger cod.

And after some much needed rain a week or so ago, things have definitely improved in the Murrumbidgee.

Plenty of fish have been caught this week with most anglers focusing on the low to no-light periods, but as Ryan Osman found out, big fish also bite at lunch time.

Kambah Pools has been a hot location producing several nice fish, and another good spot has been a few kilometres down from Casuarina Sands.

Michael Harrington hit the water last week and managed a nice cod on a mega pompadour during a solo mission - this was his first on a pompadour - and he's told me to watch this space as he is determined to join the metre club this winter.

Talking about trophy fish, some pictures have emerged of some cracking spawn run browns from the Eucumbene River.

The water has cleared up substantially and fly anglers will start to dominate in the catching department.

After a day on the river, Tantangra would be where I'd retreat for the night; bait fishing at night and spinning in the morning has been fantastic.

Do take care - with dropping water levels things are getting a little boggy.
