Did you know that the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) is in Queanbeyan-Palerang?
MOST is an enormous radio telescope operated by the University of Sydney and is in Hoskinstown. Construction of the original telescope began in 1960.
The festival will be launched on April 11 and travel until May 11.
We will have a library display with posters and technology relating to the exploration of space and about MOST orbiting between Council's three libraries over the period.
Karlie Noon, Aboriginal woman, astronomer and astrophysics post-graduate student at ANU, will be the keynote speaker at the launch at 6pm on April 11 at the Queanbeyan Library.
The event is free, but bookings are essential on 6285 6256.
There will be a great Astronomy Adventure event at the Bungendore Primary School, on Sunday, April 14 from 3-8pm. Try out telescopes and help construct a geodesic dome planetarium. Find more details about the heritage festival on the library website: library.qprc.nsw.gov.au
Ryrie Park, Braidwood: Council has awarded the tender for the construction of a new playground at Ryrie Park, Braidwood. The Braidwood Community Association did a brilliant job raising funds to contribute to the project as well as having great input into the design.
We were successful in gaining a $200,000 grant from the NSW Government as part of the Everyone Can Play Grant and the playground is one component of the Braidwood Town Centre Improvements project funded by the NSW Government's Stronger Communities Fund.
Queanbeyan River shared path bridge: Council has awarded the tender for the design and construction of a shared path bridge over the Queanbeyan River. The new bridge will be near the Morisset Street low level crossing and will connect to the Queanbeyan River Walk which we continue to extend along the river.
Community meetings: Council will be holding three community meetings in May. One of the items on the agenda will be the draft Operational Plan 2019-20, which lists the projects council plans to undertake in the financial year.
All meetings run from 6-8pm. The meetings will be held at the Queanbeyan Council Chambers on May 7, Braidwood Old Library on May 9 and the Bungendore Council Chambers on May 21.
If you'd like to add an item to the agenda, you can do so by contacting communications@qprc.nsw.gov.au.
