Herring & Associates - Lawyers celebrated its 10th birthday this year, being opened by principal Andrew Herring in October 2008. “We have always been at our present location, starting just with myself and a receptionist,” Mr Herring said.
Growing the firm since then, now “We have four solicitors including myself, and four support staff including our hardworking conveyancing clerk. We are currently recruiting a fifth solicitor to join the team, which would bring us close to having the biggest team of legal professionals in Queanbeyan.”
Mr Herring also elaborated on the experience each of them brings. “I am the firm’s principal and have been in practice for 17 years. In 2008 I was accredited by the Law Society of NSW as a specialist in advocacy and have maintained that accreditation since that time. There are only 19 specialists in that field across NSW, which makes us a pretty select group.

“Megan North is the firm’s senior associate. She has worked with me for seven years after completing her qualifications while living and working on the South Coast.
“Frank Wilson is a consultant solicitor to the firm. He has practised in his own right, and with others, for over 20 years and is a senior member of our profession.
“Georgia Briggs is a solicitor who has been with us for two years. She came to us as a graduate straight out of law school.
“We are also blessed to have the talented and hard-working Ashlee Hawke, who is our conveyancing clerk. She is a local girl who has worked with us for six years, coming to us straight out of high school. She is presently completing her university qualifications to become a licensed conveyancer.”

With such a diverse, and growing, team, “We are very much a general practice firm, with experience across all areas of law. We have very busy criminal law, family law, conveyancing and estate practices, but literally can, and have, done everything as the needs of our clients change.”
Having started out small, Mr Herring believes that what makes his firm special is their communication, experience and understanding.
Communication “is the key to our success. Research shows that lawyers are surprisingly, generally pretty poor communicators with their clients. We put it at the heart of what we do, staying in touch with our clients regularly throughout the course of a matter to ensure that they are getting the right advice, when it is needed. For our conveyancing clients, we have established a client portal which provides them real-time updates regarding the progress of their transaction 24 hours a day.”
Secondly, “our solicitors are all experienced advocates who take pride in their abilities in the courtroom. We stay up-to-date with the changes in the law and, having run some of the biggest and most complex cases in the region, have a depth of experience that is unrivalled.
In terms of understanding, “we love to work for our clients, getting to know them and how we can best help. We know that engaging in the legal system can be daunting for many, which can often only be alleviated by receiving thoughtful and timely advice. A client’s matter may be the biggest thing in their lives, but it may not be the only thing and it is important to understand and recognise where there may be other pressures that will impact on the advice that we need to give.”
They are also proud locals who are involved in the community.
“Queanbeyan is such a vibrant city that is no longer the poor cousin of Canberra. The rejuvenation of the CBD is creating some great spaces to live and work and we enjoy a diverse range of cultures and experiences amongst our residents. Notwithstanding our growing population at centres such as Googong, we still enjoy a great country feel and country values.
“I am the Chair of the Board of the Anglican School Googong, the first independent school in the region which is entering its fifth year of operation. I also have the privilege of being the honorary solicitor for the South East Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service. I am also the deputy president of the Professional Standards Board for the Anglican Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn,” while “Georgia enjoys coaching local children’s rugby league teams.”
