Fresh from her selection in the Monaro Colts rugby league squad, Remi Wilton was recently named in the Women’s Brumbies training squad.
The Queanbeyan Blues captain has played rugby union for the last five years, and said that she was “pretty stoked” to hear of her selection ahead of the 2019 Super W season.
“Especially to have made the Monaro Squad as well, [it’s] a bit of diversity for both sports, so I was pretty stoked with that.
“I made the Brumbies team this year just gone for the Super W, so I’ve been around for a little while.”
Having grown up playing rugby league, Wilton picked up union when she moved to boarding school as a youth.
She said that the adjustment from league to union was “definitely different” and something that she was still working out.
“I’m still trying to wrap my head around the rules, so it’s quite different to league.
“I think I’ve got it under control now but there’s still stuff to learn.”
Although match dates are yet to be confirmed, both the Super W and Monaro seasons are set to begin in mid-February and early March respectively next year. This will put significant pressure on Wilton to ensure that she can balance both responsibilities, but she is confident that she can cope.
“The Monaro season is pretty short, so we’re hoping that it won’t collide too much," she said.
“There’s a couple of girls in the Brumbies squad and the Monaro squad, so we’ve got our fingers crossed.”
Following her success for the Brumbies in the 2018 Super W season, Wilton was selected for the Wallaroos extended squad, and will use this selection as an opportunity to continue improving her game.
“I made the Wallaroos extended squad for this season just gone,” Wilton said.
“I’m definitely gonna try and work on that a bit more, what they’ve given me to work on, and just hopefully improve my game in general. That’s what I’m aiming for this season.”
Wilton’s selections for the Monaro and Brumbies squads follow on from a good season with the Queanbeyan Blues, who she captained to a preliminary final.
The Brumbies will kick off their Super W season on February 15. Each of the teams will play each other once before finals.
