Australia Day Awards nominations: Australia Day Awards will be presented at the Australia Day ceremonies in January. The awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year are used to recognise the outstanding contributions to the local community by local residents or brilliant events. Nominations are open until Friday, December 7 and can be made online at www.qprc.nsw.gov.au/australia-day-awards, or with paper forms available from the council’s offices.

Road condition inspection: We are undertaking an assessment of 897 kilometres of the region’s network of roads. Over the next couple of weeks you might see an inspection vehicle on local roads. The vehicles are driven at normal traffic speeds and all the cameras are focused on the road and kerb surface structure. The information we gather through this process will help us better manage this important community asset.
Trolley management policy: Council is currently seeking comment on a policy to address abandoned trolleys in the Queanbeyan CBD. The policy sets out the expectations that Council has of its retailers in managing shopping trolleys. Have your say online at yourvoice.qprc.nsw.gov.au until December 17.
Charleyong Bridge: The Charleyong Bridge replacement project is underway, with the tender now awarded to build the new structure across the Mongarlowe River. Roads and Maritime Services awarded the tender to SRG Civil. The Australian Government has committed $5 million to the $23 million project under the Bridges Renewal Program, with the NSW government providing the remaining $18 million. Council staff have been undertaking the work on the approaches to the bridge, as part of the Nerriga Road upgrade.
Bungendore Heritage Study: The council has commissioned a draft Bungendore Heritage Study which has recommended that the heritage items already on the heritage schedule remain on the schedule, that 21 buildings be investigated further for possible future heritage listing and that nine buildings be identified as sympathetic development. The study is open for comment and can be viewed at the Bungendore Library or Council office, or online at yourvoice.qprc.nsw.gov.au.
Riverside Oval: The pitch upgrade at Riverside Oval in Queanbeyan is almost complete with turf being installed this week. This project has been funded by the NSW Government Stronger Country Communities Fund and has included replacing the fencing around the ground, upgrading the pitch and will also include internal work in the clubhouse to develop a storage and office space.
