Plans to upgrade Queanbeyan’s Riverside Oval have been given the green light with a major injection of funds from the NSW Government, the Member for Monaro John Barilaro announced on Monday September 17.

Mr Barilaro said Riverside Oval, formerly known as the Marco Polo Oval, would undergo a $250,000 makeover through Round Two of the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.
Work included surface and fence upgrades, a new scoreboard and improvements to the clubhouse.
“Riverside Oval has a rich history and has served as a hub for broader community activity for many years,” said Mr Barilaro.
“In the good old days, fans would flock here to watch local football matches. This facility has brought many people together over the years and I’m hopeful this revamp will re-ignite the Marco Polo spirit that existed here.
“It’s a known fact that better sports facilities encourage more local people to play and watch sport and so I’m excited to see how this project unfolds.”
Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council mayor Tim Overall said the upgrade would restore glory back to the historic oval.
“In years gone by, Riverside Oval, or as it was known back in its prime, Marco Polo Oval, often saw thousands of people crowding around the field to watch top level football in the region,” said Cr Overall.
“With new lights being installed under Council’s CityCare program, these additional upgrades to the playing surface and surrounding facilities will transform Riverside Oval into a top class local facility.”
It’s expected the Riverside Oval upgrades will be ready for the 2019 football season.
