Carparking Strategy: The council has adopted the Queanbeyan CBD Car Parking Strategy. It will be used to contribute to the development of the CBD Master Plan. The strategy recommends an overall increase in car spaces, specifically the number of timed spaces. It recommends the construction of multistorey, smart car parks at the Morisset and Crawford Street car parks, giving priority to short-stay high turnover car parks in the CBD and long-stay, untimed car parks on the perimeter of the CBD. Council will consider estimates in the next delivery program, with the strategy recommending works to be staged over 10 or more years and funded by loans, rates and grants.
Governor-General visit: It was a pleasure to host His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Her Excellency Lady Cosgrove as they visited Braidwood and Bungendore last week. They stopped for a visit at the Braidwood Bakery and Bungendore Woodworks on their return from official duties on the south coast.
Drug and alcohol information hub: The Queanbeyan Library has a travelling interactive display from the State Library of NSW about drugs and alcohol. It provides up-to-date and accessible information and identifies support networks and agencies in the local community. There are some interesting activities, such as a standard drink demonstration and pouring challenge, a beer goggle demonstration and mocktail making displays. The display will be at the library until September 28.
Six-month report on Operational Plan: The council considered a six-monthly report on the progress made from January to June on projects in the Operational Plan 2017-18. In all, 66 projects were completed, 54 are in progress and five projects have been deferred.
