Street libraries are set up and maintained in local streets and front yards by self-proclaimed librarians and helpers. They are free for everyone and residents are encouraged to “Bring a Book, Take a Book”.
There are over 405 registered street libraries across Australia and many more which are not registered but set up in front of bookshops, community centres and shopping malls. A national registration website means that people can search on line for their closest street library.
Created by Ngunnawal residents Sue Jose and David Moncrieff, the Arabanoo Street Library is on the corner of Walga Place and Arabanoo Crescent at Ngunnawal.
Sue and David love the feeling that the street library builds community connections. Already they have met neighbours they didn’t know before.
“We are trying to make sure we have a mix or books for all ages. We love donations, particularly quality children’s books,” Sue said. The couple are delighted to see the large range of books appearing in their new street library.
