Fishing | Trout are running in the alps

Lots of eager anglers made the trek to Eucumbene or Thredbo rivers after our first downpour in quite a while.

The normal techniques paid off – glow bugs with a trailing nymph or a larger shallow diving minnow style lure, like countdowns or X-raps.

With a few more downpours predicted in coming weeks this should be the kick off of the brown trouts’ annual spawn.

Pelicans have been seen at the mouth of the Eucumbene River, which has always indicated fish are schooled up, just waiting for water to start making their way upriver.

One thing I have noticed is the few bigger fish I have seen this season look a little skinny, and I believe the low yabby activity this year would play a part in this.

The three prominent alpine lakes all seem to be fishing well off the bank and in a boat, so I think the next three or four weeks up in the mountains are going to be dynamite.

Locally, hit and miss in lots of locations; Googong has produced a few nice yellows but nothing as yet on the cod front.

LBG has been hard, locating schools of fish has been even harder, but once you do find them expect a mixed bag of reddies, yellows and cod.

I flicked a range of plastics at schools of fish all morning with no success, changed to a Tn60 in matte black carp, and second cast was game on.

I found most fish in deep water and natives were easy to spot on the sounder, following close to a school of smaller reddies.
