On Thursday afternoon, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Canberra, Queanbeyan and the Snowy Mountains as well as parts of the South Coast.
Heavy rainfall and damaging winds were likely throughout the afternoon and could lead to flash flooding, the bureau said in a statement.
At 2.25pm, the bureau upgraded its warning to include large hailstones. The warning was cancelled two hours later as the storm front missed the capital region.
Tuesday night’s storm caused a fire at Carwoola and left more than 12,000 people in Queanbeyan and surrounds without power.
The fire was in a hard to reach area but was contained by heavy rainfall.
The unplanned outage affected residents in Jerrabomberra, Oaks Estate, Queanbeyan, Gundaroo, Sutton, Bywong, Bungendore and surrounds.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Keep clear of creeks and storm drains
- Don't walk, ride a bike or drive through flood water
- If trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if rescue is needed
- Unplug computers and appliances
- Avoid using the phone during the storm
- Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
Another warning will be issued by 5.30pm.
