It's a guideline at odds with that of his teammate Vele Dukoski, who strode out to the wicket with one mission: sending the opposition searching for lost Kookaburras.
But they proved to be the perfect foil for each other as Queanbeyan blasted its way to an imposing 353-run lead on day one of a Douglas Cup clash with Wests-UC at Freebody Oval.
Ever the traditionalist, Solway always said he prefers two-day cricket over the crash and bash of the Twenty20 arena, and he took just a few hours to prove it with a classy 116 (200).
But Queanbeyan skipper Michael Spaseski laughed Dukoski "took a liking to [Wests-UC's] spinners", firing off eight sixes in his swashbuckling 135 (116).
"They copped the majority of them," Spaseski said.
"At Queanbeyan we play positively, there's no harm in going for it. We don't hold anyone back in that regard.
"Someone like Dean, his role in the team is to bat deep into the innings. Then playmakers like myself, Vele and whatnot to go around him.
"If Dean can bat a day and the quicker guys can bat a certain amount of time, that will lead to our 300-400 team scores. It was pretty much a perfect plan, it paid off so I couldn't be more happy to be honest."
Spaseski declared at 7-377 to give his bowlers a crack at Wests-UC's top order late on day one but the Lions held out to finish at 0-24.
"It's pretty good when you've got a guy at the other end going pretty hard like that, it makes my job a bit easier as well," Solway said.
"I think we worked pretty well together to be honest, Vele was going pretty hard and I was ticking over at the other end so it ended up alright.
"It opens your game up a bit and takes scoring pressure off the guy at the other end when he is batting like that.
"It was a really good innings by Vele. It was good to see him back amongst the runs because if he's at his best for the two-day comp, we'll do some damage I reckon."
Wests-UC have little time to lick their wounds as they prepare for a John Gallop Cup semi-final clash against ANU at Jamison Oval on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Eastlake's Adam Tett got his Douglas Cup campaign off to a perfect start with a brilliant 143 (250) to steer his side to 9-339 at stumps against Weston Creek Molonglo.
A day in the field wasn't the ideal warm-up for Weston Creek Molonglo as they prepare for a one-day semi-final against reigning champions Tuggeranong at Stirling Oval on Sunday. Tuggeranong's preparations were better but their clash with ANU is evenly poised, as the Vikings sit at 1-37 in response to the Owls' 216.
