The coast is fishing really well!
The bream fishos are having a ball on the far south coast, working plastics and crabs – squidgy prawns are my go to.
Snapper have come back on the bite, when you can get through the thick spread of bakers, barracuda and leather jackets.
Lightly weighted baits down a trawl, or natural plastics have been best, but prepare for lost gear fighting through the barracudas.
Last week fishing off Batemans Bay, all I felt I was doing was re-rigging!
Plenty of schools of bait could be found in 15-25m of water, and gently hopping the plastic outside the school worked a treat.
If I was not gentle and my plastic moved too fast, I was guaranteed to land a barracuda instead of a snapper.
Flathead are also back on the bite, and were found on the sand in 35m of water.
Imitation-squid plastics worked well for me, but a simple bottom-bashing rig with some fresh bait works really well too.
Locally, it's been very quiet: a cod or two out of Googong, and haven't heard much from the river.
Lake Burley Griffin is producing a few natives and it seems bait anglers are faring best.
If you're in desperate need of having your reel scream, I would head to Lake Eucumbene.
Both lure and bait anglers are catching fish there, if you can bear the cold a little longer.
