- Transplant shrubs like Camellia japonica and azaleas even if they are in bloom – which is actually a period of dormancy. They begin to grow again after flowering is finished.
- Take care when making plans for future seasons’ vegetable plantings that the same plant family is not grow again in the same plots. The most obvious differences are between root (carrots), leaf (lettuce, silver beet) and fruiting crops tomatoes, capsicum), all of which should be rotated to avoid a build up of diseases in the soil.
- Clean up empty pots and punnets by scrubbing in soapy water and rinsing in a diluted solution of bleach. Prepare a binful of potting mix for future tub plantings using 1/3 friable loam, 1/3 compost, 1/3 coarse river sand but do not add any fertiliser until required for use.
- Last chance to plant bare rooted trees as many coming out of dormancy. Check that last season’s growth on espaliered ornamentals or fruit trees is secured to supports or wires before pruning off wayward shoots.
