Rainbows Paws launch first winter campaign

But for people sleeping rough on Canberra’s streets, many won’t be able to reach for the winter woolies. That also applies to their pets.

The ACT-based organisation Rainbow Paws is calling for donations of dog jackets to help them stay warm as part of their first winter appeal.

The organisation helps to provide food and supplies for homeless people or people close to homelessness who also own pets, and its president Natarsha Lawrence said they’re focusing on looking for ways that four-legged friends can stay warm as the temperature drops.

“Usually if you’re cold and you need a coat, then your dog also needs a coat as well,” she said.

“The main things that we’re looking for for donations are dog and cat food as well as dog jackets.”

The Rainbow Paws winter appeal will run throughout all of June and July, and Ms Lawrence said they’re hoping to get as many donations as possible.

“We don't have a particular target in mind, but we just want to make sure that we have enough to hand out,” she said.

“The food we require every day and every week, and in winter Canberra gets below zero degrees and if you have a dog, you want to make sure that it’s warm.”

Since it was established in August last year, Rainbow Paws have helped to deliver supplies to hundreds of people across the ACT to help with their pets.

The organisation also helps dog owners have a safe space to look after their animals if they’re escaping from domestic violence and also subsidies desexing or vet treatment.

Ms Lawrence said pets can provide much-needed support to people living on the streets.

“If you’re sleeping on the streets, you’re very vulnerable, and that pet can provide security and companionship as well as love and unconditional support,” she said.

“They’re very good for physical health and mental health as well.”

Donations for the appeal can be made at PETstock in Belconnen, with donations sites also set up in Gungahlin, Coombs and Gowrie.
