The NSW Rural Fire Service downgraded the advice at about 8pm on Friday.
Crews were holding the fire to the west of the old railway line in the Hoskinstown area.
In a statement the RFS said although conditions were easing and firefighters were slowing the spread of the fire in parts, people in the area needed to remain vigilant and monitor conditions.
A firefighter was injured and several homes were lost in the out-of-control grass fire east of Queanbeyan on Friday.
The firefighter was taken to hospital after sustaining burns while battling the fire in Carwoola, Greg Allan from the Rural NSW Fire Service said.
It is believed up to 15 homes were lost in the fire that was described as extremely dangerous and had burned 2531 hectares by 8pm, but Mr Allen could not yet confirm numbers.
"We won't get a full figure until building impact assessment teams on the ground have been able to conduct reports," Mr Allen said.
Mr Allen said 194 firefighters, 50 vehicles and at least 10 aircraft were working to establish containment lines on Friday but struggled in the face of 34-degree heat and winds of more than 30 kilometres an hour.
He said crews would remain on the ground overnight and try to control the fire before facing potentially worse conditions on Saturday.
"If it is not contained by tomorrow, higher temperatures will make it harder for firefighters to bring it under containment."
Firefighters told residents near Carwoola and Captains Flat it was too late to leave at about 3pm on Friday.
The fire had crossed Widgiewa Road, Whiskers Creek Road and Captains Flat Road.
Those in the area of Hoskinstown, Rossi, Forbes Creek and Primrose Valley were urged to seek shelter, with properties under threat along Widgiewa Road, Whiskers Creek Road, Yilgarn Road and Captains Flat Road.
Two evacuation centres have been set up for residents affected by the fire burning near Queanbeyan.
One at The Q performing arts centre in Queanbeyan and the other at the Bungendore Primary School hall.
Captains Flat Road remained closed between Briars Sharrow Road and the Kings Highway.
NSWRFS spokesperson Paul Best said affected residents in the area should obey all instructions from fire fighters, with five trucks already in attendance as firefighting aircraft assisted crews on the ground.

The NSW RFS said residents in the area of Taliesin Road, Wanna Wanna Road, Widgiewa Road, Whiskers Creek Road, Douglas Close, O'Hanlon Place and Captains Flat Road should monitor conditions and be prepared to enact their bush fire survival plan.
Properties are under threat along Widgiewa Road and Whiskers Creek Road.
