Wildlife recovering after fires

One property owner was concerned about an eastern grey kangaroo which was hopping with injuries and later discovered to have nasty burns on the bottom of both her hind paws and fore paws.

A joey was also rescued, named Flame, by the Rural Fire Service suffering from dehydration but luckily avoided being burned.

The adorable casualties illustrate a more hopeful story from the fires where large numbers of livestock were killed.

Wildcare Queanbeyan’s Phillip Machin asked the community to be on the lookout for any injured animals from the fires and to call the wildlife rescue group on 6299 1966 for options.

“Also, be aware that wildlife may turn up in odd places in the vicinity of the fire area,” Mr Machin said.

“For example, possums in roofs, wombats wandering through and kangaroos looking lost, as their old habitat has disappeared.”
