Last week’s council meeting had a large agenda covering a wide-range of matters. Community involvement in the decision-making process is very important and it was good to see 17 members of the public in attendance to make presentations. Some of the key matters of the meeting included:

Planning and Strategy Committee: This committee will meet on the second Wednesday of each month and will primarily consider development, planning, environmental and strategic land-use related matters. Meetings will be held in Queanbeyan, with ordinary council meetings to continue at Bungendore on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
Development matters: Council considered a number of development-related matters. These included the approval of the relocation of a carpark, building and a new gazebo at the Carrington Inn, Bungendore, refusal of an application for a childcare facility in Bungendore, and referral of a planning proposal for Majara St in Bungendore to the Minister for Planning.
Queanbeyan Indoor Sports Centre: The centre was awarded a $2.25m grant from the federal government to take the centre from two courts to five. The grant was 50-50 funded, with council resolving to borrow $2.25m to fund the remained. The proposed design for the facility will be on exhibition to the public.
Australia Day: Australia Day was celebrated in style across the region with events at Queanbeyan, Bungendore, Braidwood and Captains Flat. Congratulations to all of our award winners: Sharon Baxter-Judge, Laura Worden, Zoe Billerwell, Sarah Krauth, Frank Judge, Jill Judge, Cody Moran, Roslyn Maddrell, Elaine Lollback, Emily Alder, and June Lawrence.
Captains Flat Rd: A portion of the Roads to Recovery funds originally allocated to Nerriga Road has been reallocated to see a section of Captains Flat Road between Kearns Parade and Douglas Close rehabilitated. A change to the timing of the federal government funding stream requires council to commence works as soon as possible. Delays with land acquisitions along the Nerriga Road route has meant that this project is not possible in the coming months. In the meantime, council will continue working on the Nerriga Road project to ensure it is shovel-ready for the coming financial year and we will continue to seek funding for further upgrades.
