We told you recently that Kambah couple John and Beryl Fillery, who make wooden toys to give away to charities and children at Christmas, had run out of timber.

The workshop had come to a stop. The couple, both in their 80s, appealed for help with some donated timber.

But in the true spirit of Queanbeyan and Canberra, the city responded with a big heart.

"I've got offers of timber coming out of my ears," Mr Fillery said, thrilled by the response.

"The first day I think we had 20 calls. 

"We got the first load of timber and in one day I made 50 toys. I went out to the workshop and I kept going and I kept going and I kept going.

"We want to thank all the wonderful people of Canberra."

Among those to offer timber have been people who have some at home to Bunnings, where Mr Fillery still works in the Tuggeranong store on Saturdays, and Magnet Mart in Queanbeyan, which delivered some timber on Thursday.

Magnet Mart Queanbeyan store manager Andrew Busch was not seeking any recognition for the donation and kindly agreed to be in this photograph at our request.

Mr Busch, by coincidence, has known Mr Fillery for years.

He had helped to open the Tuggeranong Bunnings where Mr Fillery was then a representative for Bosch power tools.

"He made my daughter a little pink table and chairs that stood the test of time for 10 years. He's a beautiful man," Mr Busch said.
