The Stronger Councils Framework has been proposed by the Department of Premier and Cabinet, and council supports the development of the framework but is keen to ensure broad input is included in its finalisation.
Stronger Communities
The deadline for the stronger communities fund has been extended to Friday, September 23. Any incorporated community groups and Section 355 community committees are encouraged to apply for funding for projects that will lead to more vibrant, sustainable and inclusive communities in our region. These projects should address an identified community priority and provide social, cultural, economic or environmental benefits to our local communities. More information is available on the council website.
Responsible Dog Ownership
Dogs can be a great joy to own, and everyone who owns a dog must be aware of their responsibilities. Your dog’s health, and the safety of your children, neighbours and the community is dependent on your responsible ownership and care of your dog.
Dogs must always be kept on a lead, unless in a designated off-lead area. Fines of $220 apply if your dog is not on a lead in a public place. Substantial penalties also apply under the Companion Animals Act NSW 1998 should a dog be involved in a dog attack.
Pedestrian Refuge Upgrades
After the community expressed the need for increased pedestrian safety in the Queanbeyan CBD, council staff recently installed refuges on Rutledge Street outside the Queanbeyan Library, on Antill Street and on Crawford Street.
Local Crime Statistics
It is welcoming to see the local crime statistics on a downward trend, with malicious damage to property down 30 per cent in the former Palerang area and break and enter into dwellings down 24 per cent in the former Queanbeyan area. To continue to improve the great communities we live in requires the efforts of both NSW Police and community support.
