Queanbeyan State Emergency Service deploys all female team

While it's not the first female team, they definitely thought it was something worth celebrating.

On their Facebook page, a spokesman posted the "milestone" event.

"We are proud of all our female members who contribute immensely to our unit," the page said.

Deputy local controller for Queanbeyan and member of the all female team, Zakia Patel said she hoped this would encourage more people to join the SES.

"I hope it encourages and shows males and females that they can come and join a service like this, or any other volunteer service, and be included, participate and try new experiences.

Miss Patel said despite this all girls team, units are not allocated by gender.

"Going out on jobs and stuff, it's never been about having males or females it's really just based upon who's available to go out," she said.

"We had training night scheduled and we just got together as a team and it wasn't until halfway through the job that someone said, 'Hey! We're all girls here!'"

Miss Patel has been involved in SES Queanbeyan for seven years now and loves it.

"I'd done volunteer work in the past with other organisations and this was just something that I was really interested in doing.

"I wanted to learn new skills, gain new experiences and I have been very fortunately been able to do all of that.

"You get to meet a great bunch of people.

"Especially with something like this, you are able to say I was there in the 2010 floods and I got to be part of that.

"It's a sense of pride and achievement,"' she said.
