The venture has so far proven successful and Hill was recently named as a finalist in the Australasian Quilt Convention Challenge - for an impressive fifth occasion.
“I’ve always worked with fabric and textiles so I think it was probably just a natural progression to move into quilts,” Mrs Hill said.
“I think this is probably the fifth time I have been a finalist and I have actually won first prize once, but it’s always a good feeling.
“I mean it’s an Australia-wide competition and they only select about 15 or 20 quilts as finalists so it’s always good to make it through to the final group.”
Hill’s signature style of bold lines, bright colours, and boundless imagery has scored her a spot as a finalist in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2014, and now in 2016, with the talented artist taking out the gong for first place in 2011.
The theme for the 2016 AQC Challenge was ‘Tradition with a Twist’ and Hill utilised her inherent love for fabric and colour to compose an early 20th century tattoo style inspired quilting creation.
“I just love fabric, all fabric, rich fabric, colourful fabric” Mrs Hill said.
“And I suppose our quilts are a little bit out of the ordinary, not really run-of-the-mill or traditional despite the fact that we are exploring a traditional medium.
“They can take between six to 12 months to make because the patterns are all individually drawn, and then from that all the pieces are individually cut and stitched as well, so it’s quite a lengthy process.”
