Weeks after federal Labor announced a $6.6 million upgrade to roads connecting Canberra and Queanbeyan, the Coalition has unveiled its own plans for transborder transportation infrastructure upgrades, including a potential northern bypass for Queanbeyan.
Under a Coalition government, the Lanyon Drive and Tompsitt Drive intersection at Jerrabomberra would receive an extra $6 million to upgrade the existing roundabout to traffic lights, on top of the $6 million already committed by the NSW government.
Work on the intersection is already scheduled for later in the year.
Another $1 million would go towards widening the Monaro Highway, while an additional $2 million would be committed to design works for the duplication of Pialligo Avenue.
The works would include plans for a potential link from Pialligo Avenue to the Kings Highway, providing Queanbeyan with a northern bypass.
A joint statement by federal major projects minister Paul Fletcher, ACT Senator Zed Seselja and the Member for Eden-Monaro Dr Peter Hendy said the $9 million package would unlock future housing supply by connecting employment areas in the ACT to growing residential areas on the fringes of the territory.
The work would ease congestion and improve safety, they said.
The Coalition has previously committed $50 million to duplicate the Barton Highway and $25 million to extend Ellerton Drive in Queanbeyan.
