National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia each year between May 27 and June 3.
NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. The theme for NRW 2016 is Our History, Our Story, Our Future. There will be a Reconciliation Walk from Trinculo Place at 10.30am on Tuesday, May 31.
The Queanbeyan and District Historical Museum Society has always recognised the Ngambri people as the custodians of the land and have taken the advice of elders in the wording of the acknowledgement sign at the museum.
At the Museum Society's monthly meeting we were able to accept into our collection a local book, Aboriginal Heritage Stories. It is a beautiful little book featuring the contributions of indigenous people to our district and includes some stunning artwork. It is available from the Ngambri Local Aboriginal Land Council. We also agreed to seek a grant to have an indigenous painting done for the museum.
The museum already features a story board about the district and people before European settlers arrived and disturbed the indigenous lifestyle. We have a few artefacts on display.
We also have an oral history interview recording of well-known Aboriginal woman, Ethel Baxter who has contributed much to our city.
The museum in Farrer Place is open every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 4pm.
