Evidence of the tennis club’s existence dates back almost 120 years, making it one of the oldest community sporting clubs in the country, and Sunday’s event organiser Wendy Grant has been integral to the club and the research of its history.
“I have been doing a bit of work on Trove at the moment and I can find evidence of the club first forming on that site in 1896 so we’re coming up to 120 years,” Ms Grant said.
“And there is some additional evidence that there was a court there a couple of years before that.”
Nestled among the leafy greens of the Town Park, the tennis courts are conveniently located next door to the scene of the Queanbeyan Gift and Ms Grant encourages sprint spectators to pop in, collect a racquet and enjoy a day of tennis with their family and friends.
“Coinciding with the Queanbeyan Gift the Queanbeyan Park Tennis Club has decided to open the courts for the day and invite families and the community to come in and have a hit of tennis and try some of the local activities that we have got running,” Ms Grant said.
“We have got a couple of courts designated for adults to come and have a hit, we also have a number of sessions running with Hot Shots - a specialised program for children - and there will be a couple of sessions of cardio tennis which seems to be all the rage around Canberra and around Australia lately.”
The tennis club’s courts will be open to the public on Sunday November 22 between the hours of 10am and 4pm.
