RIVERSIDE Plaza has lodged a building certificate with the Queanbeyan City Council for the controversial fence erected in the north car park.
A Queanbeyan City Council spokeswoman confirmed the building certificate was lodged on Thursday, September 27.
"The building certificate has now been lodged and it will be assessed and the matter reported to council for a decision in the near future," the spokeswoman said.
Councillor Judith Burfoot said many constituents had spoken to her regarding the fence which she brought up at the Ordinary Council Meeting in August.
She said she'd be surprised if the councillors allowed the fence to remain as it is.
"The fence is a major deterrent to the free flow of people through the CBD, especially people wanting to enter the Woollies car park from the bus interchange," she said.
"Where else is there a fence like that in the CBD that inhibits access to business and a medical centre?
"This is a ridiculous situation and I'd be surprised if councillors support the fence remaining.
"In my view if council supports this it would set a precedent that you don't have to get prior approval for development. I don't think that would be a good outcome."
The lodgement of the building certificate followed vocal community backlash over the unapproved fence which appeared about a month ago. Members of the public described it as an "eyesore" and inconvenience for shoppers wanting to use the car park as a thoroughfare to other parts of the CBD.
