Qbn picked for 'history making' project

Two shipping containers will journey through six locations - one of them being Walsh's Hotel - with locals given the opportunity to help build sections of the bar.

The unconventional project, titled 'The Bar That Jack Built', is part of a month-long birthday promotion for Jack Daniel's Whiskey.

Walsh's Hotel publican Trevor Miller was happy to be picked as part of the "history making" project.

"Considering there's only six locations chosen in NSW and Victoria, it's quite exciting to be one of them," he said.

"We're really excited to be part of it because they chose Queanbeyan instead Canberra. Canberra usually gets everything and we're considered the poor relation."

The travelling bar will tour Wollongong before stopping at Queanbeyan then move on to Wagga Wagga, Albury, Shepparton and Geelong.

It will be parked behind Walsh's Hotel on Friday, September 11 from noon to 5pm. Locals can help by joining workshops to build props or and furniture or donated materials/items.

"I'm the world's worst tradesmen so they'll need to be really good teachers to make me of any use," the publican said with a laugh.

Mr Miller hoped local residents would embrace the the DIY project. Participants will also be given a chance to win an invitation to drink in the very bar they helped build once it is finished.

The completed bar will be open to the public in Sydney and Melbourne at the end of the month.

"Come down and pitch in especially if you're a handyman of some description and you'll be part of...history," he said.

Mr Miller has been in the pub and hotel business for about 20 years and had his own thoughts on what makes a good pub.

"I think as far as working a bar - you want something practical and easy to work but as far as drinking in it, somewhere where everyone's friendly," he said.

"At Walsh's our style is a traditional pub venue with some modern ideas."

"The Bar That Jack Built" will be in Queanbeyan on Friday, September 11 behind Walsh's Hotel from noon to 5pm.
