The ACT, including Queanbeyan, sent over 100 athletes to the championships and the Queanbeyan athletes won four of ACT‘s 23 medals, and recorded many personal best performances.
Queanbeyan athletes Cassandra Hopkins, Caitlin Hanna, Andrea Thompson and Imogen Laing all did particularly well for the region.
Hopkins placed first in the U/18 women’s 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 62.04, Hanna placed second in the U/15 triple jump, with a jump of 11.25, attaining four PBs each jump and Imogen Laing placed third in the U/16 Long jump with a jump of 5.42m.
Andrea Thompson placed third in the U/18 Women’s long jump with a jump of 5.77m.
It was announced last week that Thompson had been selected to represent Australia in the Long Jump at the 2015 World Youth Games in Cali, Columbia, in July.
Thompson had obtained four world qualifiers before the Championships and although she was required to win at the championships to gain automatic selection, her well over six-metre jumps assured her a spot in the Australian team.
Queanbeyan athletes to compete and attain Pb’s from Queanbeyan were:
Hannah McPherson- U/16 W Discus
Emily Hopkins- U/17 W Pole vault
Courtney Hopkins- U/17 W 1500m and 800m runs
Thomas Hopkins- U/18 M 400m Hurdles and U/18 Pole vault
Ben Cassie- U/17 M 100m, 200m, 400m Hurdles, long jump and triple jump
Annabelle Laing- U/18 W100m Hurdles and 200m
Andrea Thompson- U/18 W triple jump, 100m, placing sixth in the final, and the 200m
Caitlin Hanna- U/15 W long jump
Cassandra Hopkins- U/18 W 400m run
The ACT won a total of 23 medals, three gold, (one para athlete) eight silver and 12 bronze- Queanbeyan contingent scored four of the total.
