Is Karabar the food capital of Queanbeyan?

The suburb is home to some of the city's best tucker according to Queanbeyan Age readers who have been contributing their recommendations in response to our weekly Facebook segment 'Tuesday Tastes'.

For the uninitiated, 'Tuesday Tastes' is an opportunity for us to poll our Facebook users (almost 4000 of them) for their recommendations on where to find the best coffee, cakes and burgers in town.

We acknowledge our methods are not entirely scientific but in any case we've compiled the results from some of our more popular questions.

Karabar Bakery was head and shoulders above the competition when it came to claiming the town's best pies.

Theresa Tran has owned Karabar Bakery for the past 26 years, she believes their pastry is the secret to their ever popular pies.

"Our pies are made and baked fresh on the premises," she said.

"The pastry is thinner than your regular pie. I find with our pies the base is quite thin but the pastry on top is very fluffy."

At least 1000 pies are sold each week and Mrs Tran said each of their eight flavours are equally popular. The flavoursome pies follow a recipe passed down in the family.

She was surprised when told she was selling Queanbeyan's most popular pies.

"It's shocking," she said.

"I didn't expect that but it's nice to know our pies are appreciated. Thank you to all the customers who voted for us."

Family-owned Karabar Takeaway was voted as the destination for the best hot chips and the best pizza. Karabar Takeaway co-owner, Peter said they serve about 3000 customers per week including tradesmen, office workers and local kids.

It's about good service as well as traditional recipes that have been tried and tested, he said.

"Sales would drop if your standards drop. I wasn't aware of this Facebook thing...but I feel quite proud, it's good to know [people recommend us]," he said.

"You can't be complacent and you've got to still strive to have a better standard and better quality."

Karabar Takeaway has previously been voted the 'Best Takeaway' by radio station 104.7FM for two consecutive years.

Peter estimated the takeaway, established in 1985, goes through "hundreds" of kilos of chips each week.

The majority of customers requested their serves to be given a generous sprinkle of chicken salt but second to that they wanted the potato batons drowned in a sea of gravy.

"We cook it in clean oil, it's strained daily," Peter said.

"But there's no secret way to cook it, it's the type of chip you use. We use a thick cut chip so you get a really meaty potato. We tried french fries but it doesn't work."

When it comes to their pizzas - of which they sell about a 100 weekly - it again comes down to a good formula.

"We sort of steer clear from gourmet varities, everyone's doing that. We want to stick to a traditonal pizza," Peter said.

"We try to work on a good sauce, we try to keep it really special - lots of garlic, lots of herbs and olive oil."

An honourable mention for the best hot chips goes to Kingsley's Chicken living up to their tag line of 'better value, awesome chips'.

While, Australian franchise Crust was the second most popular spot for the best pizza.
