John and Tanya's first meeting sounds like a scene of a romantic comedy. Boy sees girl, boy likes girl but it's girl that plucks up the courage to approach said boy.
She must have made quite an impression, because John describes that first meeting as "love at first sight".
"She actually played a prank on me first. She got her boss to call me saying there was an emergency at the store. When I arrived she said 'You're hot, I want to go out with you'. But I get easily embarrassed and I left. I had to avoid the store for two weeks," he said.
"Then she came up to me again while I was having a coffee and that was that."
Perhaps, it was only a matter of time for the pair. With John working as a security guard at local shopping centre, Riverside Plaza and Tanya manning the counter at one of the jewellery stores, their paths were bound to cross sooner or later. John admits he was flattered to be pursued; he said "I liked it a lot, that she was the one doing the chasing".
The rest as they say is history with the pair becoming engaged on August 6, 2013. John, 28 sought the permission of Tanya's father and being given the all clear, he surprised her one night.
Tanya arrived home to find John on bended knee with a ring and bunch of flowers in hand. In case she needed further direction, he had helpfully spelt out 'Will you marry me?' in rose petals.
A year later the blissful pair was married on a sunny October Saturday at Rose Cottage, Gilmore surrounded by 55 of their nearest and dearest. Tanya, 21, embraced the tradition of 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue'. She wore a new dress, an old flower corsage (part of her aunt's original wedding bouquet), a borrowed veil (from her sister and matron of honour, Mandy) and a small blue satin heart was tied to her bouquet.
The bride's dress was strapless with delicate embroidery and beading. It featured purple accents around the bodice and train to match the purple and white theme. John wore a grey, three-piece suit with a white and purple tie.
Their festive reception included a touch of Bollywood dancing and even a little bit of karaoke. Their cake was a fruit cake top tier with fondant surrounded by chocolate and vanilla cupcakes by Queanbeyan-based company, Chocolate Whisk.
The couple spent their honeymoon on a 10-day cruise from Adelaide to Melbourne. They will return home to Queanbeyan and continue enjoying their lunch dates at work.
"Tanya is always happy and looks at the positive side of things," John said. "I love her smile and her attitude towards life."
