Stabbing accused granted bail

Police attended the house at around 6pm that night following a triple zero call reporting the stabbing. A Jerrabomberra man was taken to Canberra Hospital with a stab wound to his back, suffering a suspected punctured kidney and internal bleeding.

The victim's partner Erika Ilone Terhes, 47 of Ainslie, was arrested at the scene and faced court on Monday charged with reckless wounding.

Police opposed bail and will allege both parties had been drinking that evening when they got into an argument. Police facts before the court allege Ms Terhes took two knives from the kitchen, carrying one in each hand, and then stabbed the victim once in the lower back. She's then alleged to have washed the bloody knife in the kitchen sink and returned it to a kitchen drawer before calling triple zero to report the incident.

However Ms Terhes solicitor Rosemary Benet said her client said she had gone to check on her sleeping grandson at the time of the incident and returned to find her partner wounded on the floor.

Ms Terhes is yet to enter a plea to the charge.

Police prosecutor Danielle Byrne told the court that the police case would rely in some part on forensic evidence taken from the alleged stabbing weapon.

The length timeframe required for forensic tests to be carried out prompted Magistrate Chris Bone to grant Ms Terhes bail with strict conditions, including she not enter NSW, not contact the victim, report to police daily and abstain from consuming alcohol or drugs.

He said that if the accused breached the conditions, bail would be revoked and she would remain in custody until the trial.

"My concern in granting bail is not for the welfare of the general public ... my concern is for the welfare of [the victim]," Magistrate Bone said.

Ms Terhes will face court again on Monday, March 17 to enter a plea.
