LONG-TIME Queanbeyan Hospital Auxiliary member Beryl Carratt has been named the 2013 Citizen of the Year after 40 years of volunteering.

"I felt very excited and very proud to receive the award. It's very good to be recognised," the 90-year-old said.
Mrs Carratt joined the Auxiliary in 1973 and served as secretary from 1983 to 1998. She was active in all fundraising activities including fetes, cake street stalls, barbecues, raffles and serving at the kiosk.
Just last year Mrs Carratt was awarded life membership to the Queanbeyan Hospital Auxiliary in recognition for all her hard work.
Mrs Carratt's daughter Jewell Jones described the relentless volunteer as "totally deserving" of the award.
"Up until last year my mum was still selling raffle tickets. I told her 'Surely, there are young ones to do that' but she didn't mind," Ms Jones said.
"She just loves to help other people."
Mrs Carratt represented the QHA at the Auxiliary NSW Zone, Regional and State Conferences.
The Auxiliary raises in excess of $150,000 per year with the aim of making Queanbeyan District Hospital the best place it can be.
Mrs Carratt was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the Queanbeyan Probus Club and Queanbeyan Walking Group. She said helping other people was her main motivation for volunteering.
